Oral Surgery Q & A

What is oral surgery?

Oral surgery at My Time Dental Centers includes surgical procedures necessary to improve oral health and the appearance and function of your smile. Dr. Schmelter might recommend dental surgery if you have:

  • Severe gum disease
  • Bone loss
  • Teeth crowding
  • Impacted wisdom teeth
  • Severe tooth decay
  • Loose permanent teeth
  • Missing teeth

The My Time Dental Centers team offers a wide array of sedation options to put you at ease during surgery and give you the best possible outcome.

Which oral surgeries are available?

Some of the numerous oral surgeries Dr. Schmelter is highly qualified for include:

Bone grafting

Bone grafting restores tissue after bone loss associated with gum disease. During the procedure, Dr. Schmelter places a bone graft in your jaw to regenerate new tissue. He might use cadaver, human, animal-based, synthetic, or tissues from other parts of your body to complete the graft.

Tooth extractions

If you have impacted wisdom teeth, teeth crowding, loose teeth, or severely decayed permanent teeth, Dr. Schmelter can complete tooth extractions. He numbs the treatment area, offers sedation, and removes teeth to restore your smile and overall oral health with little downtime.

Dental implants

Dental implants support new artificial teeth that replace missing or extracted permanent teeth. After bone grafting if necessary, Dr. Schmelter surgically implants metal posts into your jawbone and allows them to heal before attaching new, artificial teeth.

Alveoplasty involves surgically recontouring and modifying your jawbone after tooth loss or extraction. The procedure creates sufficient space in your mouth in preparation for dental implant placement.

Tori removal

Removing a torus, or a harmless bone growth in the roof of your mouth or lower jaw, can reduce your risk of developing future oral health complications. Tori removal reduces plaque buildup and your risk of gum disease and tooth decay. It’s necessary to prepare your mouth for dentures or other prosthetic implants.

What happens during oral surgery?

Dr. Schmelter completes all oral surgeries in-house at My Time Dental Centers. He numbs the treatment area and offers sedation to relieve stress or anxiety during your procedure.

If you require or desire general anesthesia, My Time Dental Centers partners with a licensed team of nurses. Dr. Schmelter gently performs oral surgery and allows you to recover before sending you home.

What should I expect after surgery?

Arrange for someone to drive you home after oral surgery. Follow all postsurgery instructions that include taking medications as prescribed, properly caring for your wounds, following a special diet, and attending follow-up appointments with Dr. Schmelter.
