Dental Implants Q & A

What are dental implants?

Dental implants are a cosmetic dentistry solution in which Dr. Schmelter implants titanium metal posts into your jawbone to support artificial crowns, bridges, or dentures. Implants can perfect your beautiful smile if you’re missing one or more teeth, or have severely decayed teeth that require extraction. Implants are long-lasting and can optimize your overall quality of life.

What are the benefits of dental implants?

Some of the many benefits associated with dental implants at My Time Dental Centers include:

  • High success rates of 97% for 10 years
  • Easier teeth cleaning
  • Better chewing ability
  • Clearer speech
  • A lower risk of tooth decay
  • Less adjacent teeth shifting
  • More self-confidence

Dental implants offer you the full set of beautiful teeth you long for and they can prevent future dental complications.

Are dental implants right for me?

To find out if dental implants are right for you, Dr. Schmelter and his team review your medical and dental history. They examine your teeth and gums, and take dental X-rays to determine the type and severity of tooth, gum, or bone damage you have.

To be a good candidate for the procedure you must be in good overall and oral health and have adequate bone mass to support dental implants. If you don’t, bone grafting prior to implant placement may be an option for you.

What are the different types of implants?

Dr. Schmelter might recommend one of the following types of dental implants:

  • Single implants attached to dental crowns
  • Multiple implants with crowns
  • Implant-supported dentures
  • Overdentures, or snap-on removable dentures
  • Implant-supported bridges
  • All-on-X-implants

He and his team discuss the pros and cons of each type of implant prior to your procedure, and recommend one based on the number of missing teeth you have, your lifestyle, and preference.

What happens during dental implant placement?

If you require bone grafting prior to getting dental implants, that is the first step in the process. Dr. Schmelter places special membranes over areas of bone loss to stimulate regrowth.

If you have sufficient bone to support implants, Dr. Schmelter places the implants into your jawbone during a minor surgical procedure using local anesthesia, so you don’t feel any pain.

After a period of healing, he attaches connector posts (abutments) to your implants, which support new artificial teeth. He digitally scans your mouth to create new, custom-made teeth that attach to the implants and restore your beautiful smile.

How should I care for my new dental implants?

Your new dental implants can last a lifetime with proper care. Brush your teeth two times a day, floss daily, and schedule routine dental cleanings and exams every six months. Wear a mouthguard at night if you grind your teeth, and avoid chewing on ice and other hard objects.

Don’t live with loose, severely decayed, or missing permanent teeth when you don’t have to. Book a dental implant consultation with My TIme Dental Centers by phone or online today.
