Proactive dental appointments, emergency care, resolve pain, and restore healthy smiles in Mesa, AZ
The American Dental Association reports that more than 2 million people visit hospital Emergency Rooms each year due to dental pain. But at My Time Dental Centers, we appreciate that the causes of these toothaches can be prevented. In turn, you also prevent the cost, stress, and trauma associated with an ER visit. Consistent, routine care in the form of dental check-up appointments at our office in Mesa, AZ, can go far as to detect problems such as tooth decay and gum disease before they produce unrelenting pain.
With that being said, we know that not all dental emergencies can be avoided. So, Dr. Jeffrey Schmelter and the team accommodate patients with urgent needs promptly. We also encourage you to contact us right away should pain or other symptoms arise. We can ease the discomfort and resolve the problem promptly. Below are just a few reasons that patients may call us after-hours or seek emergency care and some of the things you can do at home to help preserve your teeth and restore comfort and health.
Rinse your mouth with warm water. Remove food or debris that may irritate the tooth further with floss. Do not use toothpicks or other non-dental items to remove troublesome particles.
Here again, rinse your mouth with warm water. Apply a cold compress or ice pack to relieve swelling and tenderness. Apply to the swollen area on the outside of the face. You can control bleeding by placing pressure on the spot with gauze.
Avulsed (knocked out) tooth
If a tooth becomes dislodged from its socket, hold it by the white part (the crown). Make sure not to disrupt the tissues that are attached at the root of the tooth. We need to ensure those tissues remain intact to help “re-root” the tooth in its socket. If you can, place the tooth back in your mouth. Please don’t force it. As needed, store the tooth in a container of milk or a container filled with saltwater—moments matter. The sooner we can tend to your tooth, the greater the odds that we can preserve it.
Lost dental restorations
Dislodged crowns and fillings can be temporarily held in place with an OTC dental product, such as cement made for oral care and restorations. We will want to see you quickly to repair the cavity and secure the crown.
These deep infections can be quite painful and are also characterized by swollen pockets at the gum line. To ease pain, rinse your mouth with saltwater and take any medications as your dentist directs until you can see us for treatment. Abscesses can spread to other parts of the face and body and even cause a systemic infection (sepsis). That is a medical emergency that requires immediate care at the hospital. So, do not delay getting emergency treatment if you are having symptoms like difficulty breathing and swallowing.
