The wonderful nature of dental crowns
Dental crowns are tooth-shaped caps placed on teeth to improve the appearance or protect the tooth underneath from further damage. Typically, Dr. Jeffrey Schmelter may recommend a dental crown when your tooth is decayed or damaged, but he may also prefer dental crowns in the following instances:
- To cover a severely stained tooth or misshapen teeth
- To complete the dental implant process
- To anchor a dental bridge
- To protect a tooth that has undergone root canal therapy
Many materials, including gold and composite resin, can create dental crowns. However, we prefer porcelain because it is durable, stain-resistant, and wonderful to look at. However, we will honor your preference if you want your crown made from other materials.
The process
Should Dr. Schmelter establish that you are a prime candidate for a dental crown, the next step is to prepare your tooth. We administer local anesthesia to minimize discomfort when preparing your tooth. And if you have extreme dental anxiety, we have sedative dentistry to calm your nerves.

Once you are completely numbed, we prepare a portion of your tooth to remove the damaged/decayed part to create room for a crown. We then take your bite impressions to make a perfect crown to fit your smile. In the meantime, you will wear a temporary crown for a few weeks until your crown is ready. Once your permanent crown has been made, Dr. Schmelter will use dental cement to bond the crown permanently on your tooth.
