At My Time Dental Centers, our time is your time. We are respectful of your schedule. So, you get the most out of the investment that you make in your smile. Led by Dr. Jeffrey Schmelter, our team in Mesa, Arizona, provides clear information on treatment options. We do so in an unhurried, friendly, and patient manner.
For instance, not all the individuals that we partner with want to have conventional partial or full (complete) dentures. Likewise, some patients may mistakenly believe they are not good candidates for crowns, bridges, or dentures supported by dental implants.
We have many highly specialized treatments and services available in-house due to our extensive training and capabilities. These advanced offerings include bone grafts. This technique allows many more patients to benefit from dental implant-supported replacement teeth.
Bone grafts may be suggested for patients who have suffered from bone loss. Known as “resorption,” the loss of bone in the jaw arises after teeth have been removed. The jawbone depends on the teeth for its strength and mass. Every time the teeth are used to grind down food or for other basic functions, the resulting forces are transferred into the jaw to keep the bone strong.
However, when teeth are not present, no force or energy is produced and transferred to the jaws. In an example of, “If you don’t use it, you lose it,” the bone begins to deteriorate. Resorption is a process that starts quickly, and its effects occur rapidly; around 25% of the width of the bone is lost within the first year following tooth removal. Overall decreases in bone height follow in the succeeding years. The process continues unabated without treatment.
It can lead to visible and dramatic changes in the appearance of the face. As the supporting bone deteriorates, the lower portion of the face can appear sunken and “collapsed.” The skin no longer has support to keep it taut. Furthermore, functional problems with speech or chewing food can develop or worsen.
Fortunately, Dr. Schmelter can protect the bone from resorption and halt its effects. If we determine that the level of bone is inadequate to support dental implants properly, options for grafting may be discussed. The idea is to take bone from another part of your body (or from a donor source) and transfer it to the site that requires augmentation. This process further encourages bone regeneration; for instance, Dr. Schmelter may precisely position a barrier membrane in areas with sustained bone loss. In doing so, optimal regeneration of bone cells is stimulated.
